Embedded system development was never easier. Take the coding tools you know so well - Microsoft, Intel or Borland C/C++, Pascal or PL/M - add our 188SBC with it's source level debug tools, and you're nearly done! Remotely download and debug your code right on the 188SBC.

The 188SBC is rich in features: 12-bit A/D and D/A, lots of digital I/O, battery-backed, fully static RAM, and Flash EPROM. Two serial ports that can be configured for RS-232 or RS-485 and an EPP or Centronics compatible parallel port. Character and graphic LCD's with controllers will plug right in. There is even a software controlled contrast voltage available.

And if that isn't enough peripheral support, there is an optional Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and a breadboard area so you can create any interface you need, from 3000 to 9000 gates!

 System Architecture
The 188SBC is based on the Intel 80C188XL or EA microprocessor, a CMOS derivative of the venerable 8088. Enhanced features of the processor include built-in programmable chip select outputs, interrupt and DMA controllers and special power reduction circuitry. The 188SBC adds an 82C206 interface chip that provides a PC compatible Real Time Clock, and Interrupt and DMA Controllers. To allow further expansion, a PC/104 compatible 8-bit ISA bus is included on the board. Memory includes up to 512K bytes of static RAM, which can be battery backed through a connector. Two additional sockets allow up to 512K bytes of program ROM, either UV or Flash. The power system includes a programmer for Flash devices.

 Serial/Parallel Ports
Two 8250 (PC) register compatible serial ports capable of baud rates up to 115.2K are designed in. Sockets are available for either RS-232C, RS-422 or RS-485 drivers, independent of port. These serial ports are mapped separately from COM1-4 addresses and interrupts. The Centronics compatible parallel port also complies with the Enhanced Parallel Port (EPP) specification, allowing bi-directional communication to occur at high speeds between ports. This port is mapped separately from the standard LPT1-4 addresses and interrupts

 Analog Interfaces
The 188SBC is available with a 12 or optional 16 bit A/D converter. One, eight, or sixteen channels are multiplexed into the converter through a two pole, anti-aliasing low pass filter you can define. Input voltage range is selectable for 0-10 or +/-5 volt inputs. The 12 bit converter has these great features:

  • 25us acquisition and conversion rate
  • +/- 1/2 LSB max INL and DNL
  • 72db minimum SINAD (1KHz)

The 12 bit D/A converter provides a 0-5 volt output with +/- 1/2 LSB maximum non-linearity and guaranteed monotonicity. It can be connected to an on-board eight channel sample and hold output interface for increased flexibility. Droop rate is 20mV per second maximum.

 Digital I/O - Relay Interface
There are 45 digital I/O lines available on the 188SBC, programmable in groups of 8 as inputs or outputs. For convenience, one group of 24 lines is connected to a 50 pin I/O connector that will interface directly to industry standard opto-isolated relay I/O boards. Outputs on this connector can have standard 5mA or optional 24mA sink capability. And optional LED's can give local indication of input and output status. Twenty-one additional digital I/O lines are available for other purposes.

 Operator Interface
Character and Graphic Liquid Crystal Displays that have on-board controllers are easily connected to the 188SBC LCD port. And user input can be detected using the additional digital I/O lines mentioned above, enough to interface to a 104 key keyboard matrix!

 Power System
A complete switching power supply system is built into the 188SBC. It provides clean analog and digital power as required for the board. It will take input from a 12V battery or an inexpensive wall mount AC or DC power supply. A power fail monitor can be programmed to interrupt the microprocessor through the non-maskable interrupt input. And a watchdog circuit is provided so you can make your application even more robust.

 Programmable Gate Array
The most unique feature about this 188SBC is the socket available for a Xilinx XC3030-XC3090 FPGA. This allows you to create and configure a totally custom interface design specific to your needs, without lifting a soldering iron! Use it for counters, a serial protocol converter - anything you can think of. And if you do need voltage conversion or special drivers and receivers, there is a breadboard area to make it easy.

Software Support
HiTech can provide you with Paradigm's DEBUG and LOCATE tool set at a very reasonable price when you purchase the 188SBC. With LOCATE you can use your Borland, Microsoft, or Intel compilers to compile and link code specifically for the 188SBC. DEBUG provides monitor firmware for the 188SBC and a Borland Turbo style source level debugger interface for you PC that lets you download and test your code right on the 188SBC target.
